About Roger G. Oatley
Although retired from Oatley Vigmond, Personal Injury Lawyers, I continue to provide consulting services in catastrophic personal injury cases on behalf of plaintiffs. I advise other trial lawyers who seek help in developing their claims and presenting their cases effectively at mediation and at trial. I also advise accident victims and their families who need help finding the right lawyer for their case. I no longer accept retainers to represent clients as their advocate.
I know how to develop and present complex catastrophic injury cases. I assisted thousands of accident victims and their families re-build their lives. My successful cases are too numerous to mention. The negligence cases in my practice included motor vehicle collisions, medical malpractice, professional negligence and many other kinds of accidents. I focused my work on traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and multi-trauma cases. I acted for plaintiffs from all over Ontario and in other provinces from coast to coast. I earned the respect of defense lawyers, insurance companies and trial judges by presenting cases fairly and effectively. One judge, in written reasons, said “It is difficult to conceive someone presenting a complex case in a more coherent and impressive fashion.” Best Lawyers proclaimed me the Lawyer of the Year, in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019.

Accomplishments
I was elected a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, whose membership is restricted to “lawyers of unquestionable and eminent quality, in addition to being recognized as the best in their state/province”. In addition to leading a team of lawyers and law clerks in the development and presentation of cases I also gave back to the legal profession. I served as President of the Advocates’ Society, which is the largest organization of trial lawyers and judges in Ontario. I also represented the legal profession in negotiations with the Ontario Government and the insurance industry during revisions of the automobile insurance regime. I gave countless lectures to lawyers in the personal injury field and chaired continuing education programs for personal injury lawyers for the Advocates’ Society, the Ontario Trial Lawyers Association and the Law Society of Ontario over a period of decades. I was invited to teach lawyers from coast to coast in Canada and in the United States.
I published a great many articles and a number of books in the personal injury and insurance fields. With my friend and colleague John McLeish, I co-published The Oatley McLeish Guide to Motor Vehicle Litigation, The Oatley McLeish Guide to Anatomy and Impairment, The Oatley McLeish Guide to Demonstrative Evidence and The Oatley McLeish Guide to Brain injury Litigation.
My book Addressing the Jury is the only book in Canada that teaches trial lawyers how to successfully present a personal injury jury trial. Other lawyers often credit me and my book with their successful results.
